We support the earliest stages of creating front-line innovations through grant funding and support from our virtual innovation ecosystem. The PandemicTech Innovation Fellowship is the centerpiece of our philanthropic work.
Launched in February 2020, the PandemicTech Innovation Fellowship is our initiative to identify and support the most promising global health security innovators leading the fight against pandemic infectious disease threats. The PandemicTech Innovation Fellowship 2020 supported innovators solving health security challenges in Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Australia, Mexico, India, Pakistan, and the United States. We continue to grow our community of Innovation Fellows.
PandemicTech has focused on identifying and supporting emerging leaders in the fight against biological threats, including in the critical focus areas of biosafety and biosecurity. PandemicTech Senior Advisor Luis Ochoa Carrera, Past-President of the Mexican Biosafety Association (AMEXBIO) and the Head of the Epidemiology Laboratory Network for Mexico’s Institute of Social Security, has led an ongoing collaboration with Cairo University that leverages global collaboration to improve biosafety and biosecurity capacity in Egypt.
PandemicTech partnered with Nigerian public health consultancy EpiAFRIC to organize the Health Meets Tech Infectious Disease Hackathon in May 2018 at Ventures Platform in Abuja, Nigeria. The hackathon brought together over 100 innovators from across Nigeria to compete for prizes by creating innovative solutions to challenges provided by the World Health Organization Health Emergencies Programme. The winning teams developed ideas for a portable hand sanitizer wristband that pairs with a mobile application for re-ordering, a mobile app that educates health workers about reporting notifiable infectious disease cases, and a transportation model for ensuring that infectious disease samples are safely transferred from field epidemiologists to the laboratory. The hackathon was an extraordinary success in raising awareness of the need to support local innovative solutions to local infectious disease challenges.
PandemicTech is pleased to be a part of the WHO Strategic Partnerships Portal for IHR and Health Security, joining funders from around the globe to support pandemic preparedness and response.
